Beyond Tunnel Vision
By Shawn Herkstroeter, GIA Director of Coaching
What might others see in your leadership that you cannot see from where you stand? Every leader has strengths, blind spots, and opportunities for growth. Gathering feedback from a variety of team members and stakeholders can increase your self-awareness and help you unlock your leadership potential.
A 360-degree assessment is a development tool that collects structured, confidential feedback about a leader’s behaviors and skills from people who experience their leadership in different ways. Unlike a traditional top-down review, it brings together multiple perspectives. Our process includes feedback from 10–12 individuals, along with the leader’s own self-assessment.
This provides a unique opportunity to discover behaviors that others appreciate so you can build on those strengths. It also helps you identify blind spots or the gaps between what you intend and how others experience your leadership. Finally, it replaces a vague desire to “be a better leader” with specific behaviors you can practice.
There are many 360 assessment platforms available. At Grace in Action, we prefer the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) 360, which focuses on observable leadership behaviors. It’s based on the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership described in The Leadership Challenge by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner. Their decades of research provide a strong foundation for leadership growth and development.
What’s the process for conducting an LPI 360?
We begin by helping you identify individuals who can offer meaningful feedback from a variety of perspectives. Once the list is finalized, we email each person an invitation and a link to complete the assessment. You also complete a self-assessment, allowing you to compare your perceptions with the feedback from others.
After the assessments are complete, we provide a detailed report and a guided debrief to help you make sense of the results. As a certified LPI 360 coach, I help leaders interpret patterns, process surprises, and choose meaningful next steps for growth.
The LPI 360 takes the guesswork out of where to grow next. It will help you recognize what’s working, what’s not, and help you move forward with a personalized growth plan that’s practical, meaningful, and impactful.
