Your Behavior Matters

By Shawn Herkstroeter, GIA Director of Coaching

What makes the biggest difference in how people feel about their workplace? According to Kouzes and Posner, its how their leaders behave.

How does your team experience your leadership? The LPI 360 assessment measures 30 leadership behaviors, helping you see your strengths and opportunities for growth through the eyes of others. Discover two of these behaviors that distinguish exceptional leaders.

One of the most important qualities people look for in their leader is credibility. It is the foundation of effective leadership. It leads to loyalty, buy-in, team spirit, a strong sense of ownership, and healthy relationships. People don’t follow leaders because of their titles. They follow leaders they trust. Key behaviors of a credible leader include:

  • Treating others with dignity and respect.

  • Setting a personal example of what is expected of others.

  • Following through on promises and commitments.

Without credibility, a team soon becomes disengaged, apathetic, and defensive. Work becomes transactional as individuals begin to lose focus on the mission, and turnover increases.

Another important leadership practice is collaboration. It moves an organization away from top-down control toward shared leadership. This leads to increased innovation, creativity, engagement, and ownership. It also promotes organizational resilience as decision-making authority moves closer to those doing the work and individuals feel empowered to be nimble, agile, and adaptive. Key behaviors of a collaborative leader include:

  • Developing cooperative relationships among team members.

  • Actively listening to diverse points of view.

  • Giving people a great deal of freedom and choice in deciding how to do their work.

Without collaboration, a team can easily become siloed. Decision making slows down. Engagement drops. And innovation lags.

These are just two of the many important areas of leadership explored through the LPI 360 assessment. As a certified LPI 360 coach, I can help you gain insight into your leadership impact, identify opportunities for personal growth, and strengthen your leadership to move your ministry forward.
